How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD Grant — Step by Step

You have 30 days from the date of the declined decision to submit an appeal. After 30 days, the window closes and you cannot appeal that specific month. However, you can still qualify for future months.

  1. Go to the SASSA appeals portal: srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Scroll down and click the green ‘Lodge an Appeal’ bar.
  3. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number.
  4. Enter the phone number you used when you originally applied for the grant.
  5. Click ‘Send Pin’. Wait for the OTP to arrive by SMS. Enter it on the page.
  6. Select the specific month you are appealing (you can only appeal one month at a time).
  7. Choose your appeal reason from the dropdown menu. Select the reason that best matches why you believe the decline was incorrect.
  8. Click ‘Submit’. Your appeal has been lodged. Write down your reference number.
IMPORTANT

You must use the same phone number that was on your original SRD application — not your current number if it has changed. If you have changed your number, update it first at srd.sassa.gov.za before appealing.

Appeals are reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not SASSA itself. Decisions are month-specific.

How Long Does a SASSA Appeal Take?

SASSA and ITSAA do not publish a fixed timeline for appeal decisions. Based on common beneficiary experiences, appeals typically take between 2 and 8 weeks to be reviewed. You can track your appeal status at the official SASSA appeals portal using your ID number and phone number.

What If Your SASSA Appeal Is Declined?

If your appeal is declined, the decision is final for that specific month. You cannot appeal the same month again. However, you remain eligible to apply and be approved for future months once your circumstances change.

If you believe the appeal decision was incorrect, you can contact the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11 and request a formal review, or visit your nearest SASSA office with your supporting documents.

FAQ — SASSA Status Declined

Q: Can I reapply immediately after being declined?

A: You should appeal first rather than reapplying. If you reapply, your existing application history may not carry over. Lodge an appeal within 30 days for the specific month that was declined.

Q: My income was a one-off gift — why was I declined for ‘income source identified’?

A: SASSA’s system detects deposits in your bank account during the assessed month. Even a single one-off payment can trigger a decline. You can appeal and provide a written explanation and bank statement showing the deposit was not regular income.

Q: How many months can I appeal at once?

A: You must appeal each declined month separately. However, you can submit multiple appeals at once — one per month. Each is reviewed independently.
